Before the Industrial Revolution and before sewing machines, all leather goods were handsewn by artisans. For the early pioneers, a well-made pair of leather boots meant the difference between surviving a blizzard or dying of hyphothermia. The hand sewing technique those artisans used is called saddle stitching. Read more
Leather hides that we use are sourced from the top tanneries of Pakistan excelling in best tanning technologies and ethical practices. We only work with full grain genuine hides. Types of leathers that we use are as follows:
VEGETABLE LEATHER
It’s called “vegetable” because of the natural materials used in the tanning process like tree bark. Vegetable tanning or veg tan as it’s sometimes called, is one of the oldest methods of tanning known to man. It has literally been around for centuries. But less than 10% of the world's leather is tanned this way today.
What makes vegetable tanning so unique is it allows us to use thicker leather and results in more body and character - perfect for bag making. Vegetable tanned leather also tends to age better and develops a rich patina over time. And it has that awesome classic leather smell.
CHROME LEATHER
Chrome tanning uses a solution of chemicals, acids, and salts (including chromium sulfate) to tan the hide. It’s a very quick process, taking about a day to produce a piece of tanned leather. First, hide are limed to remove hair and then are “pickled” by being left in the acid salt mixture, before being placed in the chromium sulfate. All hides then come out looking light blue (known as “wet blue”).
CRUST LEATHER
Crust Leather is a leather article which is dried after tanning but not been dyed. When it comes to chrome-tanned leather, it is known as “chrome crust” and, for vegetable-tanned leather, as “vegetable crust”. Crust leather is rarely processed. Generally, the leather is dyed and finished before processing. Crusting is the most important part of crust leather production. The main stages of the crust leather production process are called, preparatory stages, tanning, crusting and surface coating.
The crusting process starts the time when the hide is thinned, re-tanned and regressed. Often a dye method is included in the crusting. Also, part of the crusting process includes drying and softening. At the stage, WF Leathercraft obtain crust leather skins & die them with veg-tan color. After dying the skin with colors, wax is being applied on them. wax protects that leather & its color even in moisturized weather.
PULL UP LEATHER
Pull Up Leather is one of the most popular leathers that we offer mainly due to it’s high quality and beautiful natural appearance. Pull Up leather is an oil and wax rich leather that is completely natural, unaltered and rugged yet soft and supple to the touch. It has a unique natural appearance which lightens in color when stretched during wear to produce a unique worn-in effect with time. Due to this soft and scratch-sensitive finish, the leather quickly gets a beautiful vintage-patina.
During the tanning and finishing process the leather is colored with aniline dyes that are impregnated with natural-based oils and/or waxes instead of being coated with paints and pigments. The oils and waxes tend to darken the original aniline dye coloration, but “pull up” the lighter color when stretched and pulled. The oils and waxes provide even more beautiful shading and unique, subtle color variations. This aniline dying process allows the scars, scratches and wrinkles that occur naturally on the leather hides to show through the finish.
Crazy Horse leather is made from full-grain cowhide – the highest-quality natural leather in the world. A coating of natural wax is applied to the leather, then buffed and polished to a rich, smooth finish. Wear and tear will increase the bag’s beauty – bumps and scratches change the color tones in the leather, creating the rich, multi-hued sheen that only the finest natural leather is known for.
